Charles Dewey Noneman, 82, of Midland, passed away at his home on Saturday, July 24, 2010. The son of the late Erwin and Evelyn (Dewey) Noneman, Charlie was born March 16, 1928 in Marshall, Michigan. After graduating from Marshall High School, he attended Western Michigan University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in music education in 1950. It was at WMU where Charlie met Nanine Landis, and they were married in Kalamazoo on Oct. 17, 1953. He entered the U.S. Army in 1951 and was stationed in Nurnberg, Germany with the Army Entertainment Division until 1953. Charlie began his long career in music education with the Coleman Community Schools where he was the first band and choir director at Coleman High School. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan and moved to Midland to join the Midland Public Schools in 1962. Charlie served as the first choir director when H.H. Dow High School opened its doors in 1968, and taught instrumental music at every elementary school in Midland over the years. He retired from teaching in 1989. Charlie also taught private saxophone and clarinet lessons to hundreds of young musicians over the years. He never quite retired from teaching, as he was always willing to give extra help to his grandchildren with their music studies. Music was always at the center of Charlie’s life. He was a co-founder of the choral chamber music group, Canzona di Musica. Charlie was a member of the Midland Concert Band and was also a long time member of the Chemical City Band. In 1985, Charlie and Nanine were honored as the recipients of the Midland Music Society’s Kendall-Pelton Musician of the Year Award. Charlie was a member of First Baptist Church for over fifty years and served as choir director for more than twenty years. Charlie was an avid bowler, and bowled with Nanine in the Midland Public Schools Teacher’s League. He was also a loyal Wolverine and Tigers fan.
