A.B. ‘Bert’ Savage 92, of Midland, died Friday morning, November 25, 2005 at the MidMichigan Medical Center. He was born December 22, 1912 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, son of the late Charles Albert and Clara Blanche (Hull) Savage. Bert had received a Bachelor of Arts Cum laude, Bachelor of Chemical Engineering with distinction, and Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He had worked for the Dow Chemical Company for nearly forty years as a research Chemical Engineer, specializing in the development of plastics and thickeners, mainly cellulose based. He received 26 U.S. and many foreign patents, and wrote many encyclopedia and book articles in his field. After his retirement in 1976, he was active in the American Civil Liberties Union and the local Democratic Party. A world traveler, he enjoyed mountain hiking, and skiing, having been on the ski patrol at Caberfae for many years and had always been an intellectually and physically active person. He had and maintained beautiful gardens, growing vegetables, lovely plants and flowers. Bert married the former Esther Anderson on May 9, 1957 in Midland. Surviving besides his wife Esther, are his children John Gordon (Julie Ann) Savage of Saginaw and Marjorie Ellen (Tom) Abbott of Natick, MA, a brother Robert Hull Savage of Scotia, New York; three grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Bert was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth (Coppersmith), the mother of his children, in 1955.

A memorial service will be held on 3 p.m. Thursday, December 1, 2005 from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Midland, Rev. Jane Thickstun officiating.
